7 Fruit-Free Smoothies

I dream of smoothies in yoga class.

The room is 105F degrees with 60% humidity and pools of sweats are making an island out of my yoga mat. I love every minute of the intensity. And after working that hard I want a reward.

On the really tough days, visualizing myself sipping down a cool, refreshing smoothie is the only thing that gets me through class. I also wouldn’t hate one poured right over my head.

There is an issue with smoothies though. Loads of sugar from the fruit. It is naturally occurring sugar but I still have to watch it. I can down 24 ounces in under five minutes. In real food that can equal one whole banana, ten strawberries, half a mango and a cup of coconut milk. That’s almost 400 calories and 37 grams of sugar. I wrote an article on the pros and cons of smoothies here.

So how about fruit-free smoothies! Less natural sugar, a focus on vegetables and more micronutrients. The first two recipes are ones I created and then I rounded up another five from incredibly talented recipe creators I admire.

Enjoy!

Brittany, thank you so much. People think I’m crazy after I say I think juicing diets involve too much sugar, and I could never survive off of that much sweetness alone, even if it is naturally occurring. I’m no dieter, but too much sugar makes my stomach hurt, natural or not. My boyfriend and I plan on starting to incorporate smoothies in our breakfasts, so these are just down right perfect. I plan testing them out soon. Thanks, darling! 😀

Addie, I’m so thrilled to hear your thoughts on this. The juicing fad has it’s place for sure, lots of micronutrients in there but tons of sugar too. It spikes my blood sugar and gives me headaches so I’m totally with ya 🙂

I finally figured out my smoothies were making me gain weight and giving me gerd in the process. Although I didn’t think I had too much, my weight says otherwise. I was adding 2 spears of pineapple plus 1/2 cup of frozen cherries in 2 cups of coconut milk kefir, and slowly over time it started to affect me negatively. Will be trying the sweet potato smoothie soon, thanks!
